BC AWE (British Columbia Association for Wellness and Education) required a governance platform that respected the complexity of indigenous community structures while providing the administrative efficiency of modern software. This wasn't a standard SaaS build — it was a project where cultural sensitivity had to be embedded into every UX decision, database schema, and workflow design.
The platform needed to manage governance processes, community communications, and documentation in a way that aligned with existing decision-making frameworks rather than imposing corporate software conventions.

Governance Workflows That Respect Tradition
We began with extensive stakeholder consultations to understand the governance structures we were digitizing. The platform's workflow engine was designed to be configurable — not prescriptive. Community administrators can define their own approval chains, notification rules, and documentation requirements without developer intervention.
This flexibility was non-negotiable: a platform that forces communities into a rigid workflow would undermine the very governance structures it was meant to support.
Accessible Design for Diverse Users
The platform serves users ranging from tech-savvy administrators to elders who primarily interact with technology through mobile devices. We designed a dual-interface approach: a full-featured administration dashboard for governance coordinators, and a simplified mobile-first portal for community members that prioritizes readability, clear navigation, and minimal cognitive load.
All interfaces meet WCAG 2.2 AAA standards, with particular attention to color contrast, font sizing, and screen reader compatibility.
